Rang De Basanti

When you are watching a movie in a foreign land and that too a patriotic movie, it adds a new dimension to your thought process. It was a similar feeling last night when we went to watch the latest bollywood blockbuster "Rang De Basanti. The language, the setting, the characters everything was fabulous barring the end. I personally did not like the end. However, such movies are important to awaken the new generation.

India as a whole is in a phase of a strategic inflexion point where things are changing at a rapid pace. The new Indian generation is the same as portrayed in the movie. I see the new generation as energetic, vibrant and enthusiastic. There are plenty of opportunities these days for the youth. Things are just different now than they were a few years back.

India has a great potential and this is not only evident from the latest political visit of the US president but also through the expansion of Indian IT companies in the US. Amidst all these changes this movie introduces the public to a new concept, the ability of youth to fight against corruption. It introduces the lost patriotic feelings back into the minds of youth.

Bollywood movies provide a great channel to spread the awareness about socio-political issues to the largely illiterate population of our country. Looking at the trend a more meaningful cinema will help us realise our true potential as a nation state. It will improve the societal framework and the awakening of the youth will weed the narrow minded, corrupt personnel from the Indian society to make it a better place for the future generations to come.

As charity starts at home, it is important for the youth to take responsibility of their own life and not let corruption override their thought process. They need to defy corruption by refusing to participate in it neither on the receiving end nor at the giving end. A majority of the problem will be solved if today's youth refuse to grease the palms of a ticket checker or a police guard or a traffic police person or an employee at the RTO.

An easier route to success by using corrupt means should be stopped and a dose of capitalism in our democratic framework should be introduced. Things have already started to improve. The introduction of computerized reservation terminals for train travel a decade back has led to the elimination of middle men disguised as travel agents responsible for booking tickets in advance thus causing a shortage of reserved seats.

Honesty is a trait that can be imposed using a strict framework with uniform justice to all irrespective of the status of the person in the society. Equality has to be extended when it comes to the judicial system and this will bring a drastic change in today's thinking. In light of all these suggestions, it is important to make more movies in these lines using different themes to project an important message to the new generation.

Long live India. The revolution has begun.

NRI Diary's Opening Comments

This blog will feature my experiences in India as well as in the US. It has been a little less than 3 years when I shifted to the US. Every time I go back to India, I have mixed feelings on the quality of life in India vs. US. It's an internal struggle to convince myself as to which one is better for me. Yes, better for me and my family. When it comes to questions of life there are no right or wrong answers, there are only opinions. These opinions are very personal and imposing it on anyone will be doing injustice with them. I have had several interactions with variety of people since the last 3 years in the US. The socialization was not only restricted to Indians but people from all ethnicities who have come to the US in search of gold. Most of these people were immigrants who were born and raised in a different country just like me and my wife. Their opinions do matter to me as I want to learn from their mistakes and also want to take guidance from their success. On a closing note, this blog will feature all the experiences, good or bad and will bringforth a perspective which is not only unique but also thought provoking. Happy Reading !!
